Thank you for helping your child do elearning with us. Hopefully that will be the only one we have.

Please be sure your child is practicing their math facts as much as possible. Many children are struggling with them and it makes it harder to move on to the next set of facts. If they get stuck on a fact ask them what strategy they can use to figure out the answer.

Remind your child to bring back library books on Thursdays.

Catholic schools week starts on Sunday with 9:30 Mass followed with open house. Be sure to stop by our classroom to see what the kids have been up to. They are excited to show you their work and projects.

Have a great week!

It's the time of year to complete the second Iready diagnostic tests. This week we will complete the reading diagnostic and next week we will do the math. Test results will be sent home in February when the entire school is completed.

Please remind your child how important this is and to pay attention to what they are doing. Thank you for your help.

Happy Valentine's Day

So, our first day of no masks went well. Please remind your child not to put their fingers in their mouth (they all want to wiggle their loose teeth) and to be sure to cover their mouths when sneezing. We do sanitize their hand a lot during the day.
Also, if your child is more comfortable wearing their mask they are more than welcome to. We did have a few still wearing them and it was not an issue in our room.

Thank you for all your help regarding masks.

Another short week ahead so we will have all our tests on Thursday this week.

Just a reminder that Friday, January 28th will be a 1:00 dismissal day. No after care available.

Our 100 day of school is fast approaching us. It is on Tuesday, February 1st. The children in kindergarten and first grade may come to school dressed up like they are 100 years old. However, this is optional for the boys and girls.

IMPORTANT
This part of the school year first grade starts to push reading fluency and math facts. Please be sure your child is reading the decodable books that come home most days. They can even reread the books from the past.
The same goes for math facts. Please make sure your child is practicing their math facts every night. It is difficult for us to move ahead with them when the children don't seem to know their facts without counting on their fingers. I always suggest to them to have someone aske them the facts while they are riding in a car, during tv commercials and maybe right before bedtime. The more they practice the better they will know them.
Thank you for all your help!

Stay Warm!

January 17, 2022

Their collection must fit in the bag and no larger ( m&m's marbles, cards, cotton balls, etc.)

This week we will be doing our Iready diagnostics. It will be interesting to see how much our children have improved.

Have a great week and stay warm!

February 8th

Today the children brought home their Math Fact Fluency folder. They are to be timed for 1 minute as they complete the addition side of the paper. Then record their score and then they turn it over and do it again with the subtraction side. This is to be completed every night and returned on Fridays so I can review it and give them new practice sheets on Monday.
This is great fact practice for them and they seem to like the idea of timing themselves.
Thank you for your help with this.

Thursday we will celebrate Valentine's Day in our class. Please do not send in any treats or cards to be passed out. We have been making them is school for the kids to pass out to their friends.

Have a wonderful week!!

Tuesday, Dec, 22nd will be our last day before Christmas break. Everyone can dress down in any Christmas clothes they want. Dismissal is at 11:30 so the children don't need lunch or a snack.

A reminder that on Friday, October 9th we have early dismissal at 1:00.

Please make sure your child's mask fits them. Adult size masks are too big and we have been giving the children child size masks in school if theirs constantly falls down.

September 28th, 2020

We will have our first math fact test this Wednesday. Be sure to practice the double facts for the test.

Reminder:  All homework is counted towards grades, including any online assignments. Please be sure to complete any online assignments by Friday of each week. If you have not gone on and completed any assignments be sure to do so this week. I only assign one activity per week.

I sent home everyone's user names and passwords for Raz-kids, IXL, Seesaw, and Boomcards.

Please label any SCA clothing since all the children are wearing the same clothes. We tend to find sweatshirts on the floor with no names on them.

September 21st, 2020

The children did an awesome job on their tests this past week. This week I will still read the tests to them but will not help with any answers.

Thursday is Pediatric Cancer Day and we will have a dress down day for $1.

We will not have school on Friday. The teachers will be doing on line professional development classes.

Well, we survived our first week of school and the children did a wonderful job. We are practicing social distancing and wearing our masks as well as working hard. AND thank goodness for the new air conditioners!!

Reminders

If you have not sent in an extra mask please do so. We have already had to change out some masks this week for various reasons.

Friday, is a short day, 11:30 dismissal. We will not have lunch but will still have a snack.

Continue to pray for everyone's health and safety. We all want to stay in school.

August 21, 2020

Welcome to first grade. I am so excited to be back to school and to be working with your child. Our goal this school year is to become awesome readers, know our addition and subtraction facts, continue to be kind and loving students, and to stay safe.
Myself and the rest of the school staff will do our best to keep your child safe in our building. Please keep in mind this is all so new to us so if we have to change a few things please bear with us. We are in the learning stage and trying to find what works best for everyone.

Just a few reminders:  Be sure to check your child's take home folder every night. Some days they will have papers in it to show you and other days there might not be much in it.

After being in school one day so far we noticed that the children who did not bring their backpacks and were just carrying their folders had a difficult time using the hand sanitizer they are given as they walk into the building in the morning. With that being said it is probably a better idea to send them with their backpacks every day. They did fit into their milkcrates and should not be a problem. Thanks for understanding.

Please send back the Student Information sheet as soon as possible. It is important that I have everyone's email addresses and phone numbers in the event we end up going back home for elearning.

You can always reach me at sduh@scaoaklawn and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Keep praying for a healthy and safe school year and that we can stay in our classrooms.

Friday, March 20th
I set up an account for the students to go on to complete daily activities. It is called Classkick. It is an app you will have to download on an Ipad or on your laptop.

https://classkick.com/

Each assignment has a special code to get into. I will post the code each day. If you would like to try it out there is a practice assignment I put up today and the code is UJD54K. The site also offers an introductory lesson and the code is 8IE2IQ.  Let me know how it works out for you. I can see the assignment at my end as they are doing it.

Good morning, First Grade! I hope everyone is hanging in there. It has been a trying first week of e-learning for all of us. Just do the best you can and hopefully all this will get easier as we go along.

Try to administer a spelling test today and if you want to screen shot it and email it to me that would be great. You can always email me pictures of any work they are doing at home, like their journal entries.

Our class is rockin' RAZ-KIDS. So many have been on it, reading stories and taking quizzes.

Tuesday, March 17th

So, day 1 of E-Learning is done and over. I hope everyone survived. Just a few notes for today.

*We understand that all this work may seem like a lot. This is new to all of us and we will try to do our best to keep you updated with the curriculum. Just try to do your best and what you are able to do.

*Every day we will be posting a journal sentence. If possible, get a spiral notebook to write and draw in. You can choose to complete the sentence or write how you spent the day. You can also draw a picture to go with it (like we do in school). It will be fun to hear your sentences and we will share some of them when we come back.

Journal entry for Tues, March 17th;
If I caught a leprechaun I would.....

Monday, March 16th

While we are home for the next few weeks we will post some assignments so the children do not fall behind. A packet of work was sent home with each child and it is expected to come back once we return. We do not expect them to complete it all in one day. They should spread out the work and do a little each day along with any assignments that are posted on this sight.

We suggest that your child follows this schedule;
Monday- Sight words, spelling words, and vocabulary words and reading fluency
Tuesday- Reading fluency and Math facts
Wednesday- Reading fluency, math facts, and Religion
Thursday- Reading fluency, spelling words, math facts and science
Friday- Try to administer a spelling and sight word test if possib
le.

There are a lot of wonderful websites your child can go on while home. They are posted under each subject on our Week in Review tab.

Please don't forget RAZ-Kids. It is a great resource for their reading fluency and comprehension ( I get a report every Sunday of who has been on it and how they did).

You can email us any time with questions and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Please pray that we are all back to school as soon as possible and let your children know that we will miss them and pray that they stay safe.

Our first grade had a wonderful visit from the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. She brought in 3 different animals for us to see, observe, touch, draw, and learn about. Thank you FSA, for funding our visitor.

If you are planning on doing the Great America Read to Succeed program don't forget to register.

Even though the whole school did not attend mass on Friday our first grade did and they did an awesome job on the readings and petitions.

This part of the school year we step the reading fluency. Please be sure your child is reading every night to you. The more the read they better they will get.

Don't forget, RAZ-Kids is a great way to build reading skills. The children should go on it at least once during the week and read a story, listen to it and take the quiz. When I get my weekly reports of who has been on it and I see how they did I will always inform you if I see that your child is struggling with certain reading skills so we can both help them. We want your children to be successful in reading and RAZ-Kids is a wonderful tool.

*If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions you can always reach me at
