Please Support the Student Success Act

Urge your Representative to Support Re-authorization of ESEA by Voting for The Student Success Act (HR5)
HR5 is the House version of the long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).   Since its inception in 1965, ESEA has long upheld the principle that students in need, regardless of whether they attend a public or private school, are entitled to an equitable share of services and benefits. However, following the passage of No Child Left Behind in 2004 (the last ESEA reauthorization), this principle has been continually eroded with private school students and their teachers no longer receiving the equitable share of services and benefits to which they are entitled and that Congress intended. HR5 is the first step towards restoring equity and strengthening the historical safeguards designed to insure the fair and equitable treatment of private school students and their teachers. The House plans to begin considering HR5 on Wednesday and vote on the bill Friday.

As the U.S. Bishops reiterated in their 2005 statement Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium, "government at all levels, acting in partnership with parents, has a responsibility to provide adequate professional and material resources to assist all children to attain a quality education." The Student Success Act's provisions related to improving access to services to students in need and their teachers, regardless of where they attend school, makes a substantial contribution to putting the needs of students and their families first.

Take Action Now

Call Your Representative and tell them:

  • Please support the re-authorization of ESEA.   Passage of The Student Success Act will be the first step towards correcting the inequities of No Child Left Behind including the improvement of the consultation requirements and other conditions connected with providing equitable services for students and teachers in religious and independent schools.
  • As the U.S. Bishops reiterated in their 2005 statement Renewing Our Commitment to Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools in the Third Millennium, "government at all levels, acting in partnership with parents, has a responsibility to provide adequate professional and material resources to assist all children to attain a quality education."
  • The Student Success Act's provisions related to improving access to services to students in need and their teachers, regardless of where they attend school, makes a substantial contribution to putting the needs of students and their families first.
Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of Catholic Education!

Verizon App Challenge Winners

Under the direction of teachers, Mrs. Carolyn Anderson and Mr. Sean Haneberg, two teams of 6th graders participated in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. They were tasked with developing an original concept for a mobile app that incorporated STEM principles and must address a real need or problem in their school or community.

The students worked after school with Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Haneberg developing their ideas and creating a video to submit. It was just announced that one of the teams won Best in State from over 1,000 entries in Illinois! We are so proud of them! The team members are: Isabelle Arquilla, Molly Fineran, Annie Gainer, Clare Murphy, Bridget Murphy, Ellen Murphy, and Autumn Stanke.

Their app is called Remember Me. With this app, people with Alzheimer’s can recognize their family, friends, caregivers, loved ones and four-legged friends. You would take a picture of a person and it would automatically tell you the person’s name, how old they are, and show any videos or pictures you have taken with them.

The team will now be eligible for consideration as Best in Region. Good luck from the SCA community!

UPDATE: January 16, 2015

The team won Best in Region!!!  The school will receive a $5,000 grant to be used to advance STEM education at SCA.  The girls are 1 of 12 middle school winners.  Four winners will be chosen for the final prize of Best in Nation.  Once again, good luck from the SCA community!!!  You have already made us all proud of you!

January 21, 2015 We were just informed yesterday that Family Pride will be closing their doors.  We cannot refund or exchange any certificates that have already been purchased.  We encourage you to go in and use any TRIP Certificates you may have.  We talked to the owner and he will honor them and their plans are to close within three to four weeks.

Many students and parents enjoyed participating in the Family Ice Skating Party at the Oak Lawn Park District Ice Arena. Thank you to the Family School Association for hosting the event.

Our 8th graders prayerfully presented the Living Stations of the Cross:

Frequently Asked Questions about Smart Tuition ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Why is St. Catherine of Alexandria using Smart Tuition? More and more families are paying utility and other monthly bills online because it is easy and convenient. With their user friendly website and mobile app, Smart Tuition makes paying tuition easy by allowing families to keep track of payments and current account information. By providing convenient email and text message reminders, families can better ensure timeliness of payments and accurate account balances. The Archdiocese of Chicago has mandated that all schools transition to the use of Smart Tuition. Is St. Catherine’s using Smart Tuition for tuition payments only? Yes. SCA is accepting only tuition payments through Smart Tuition. Is enrollment mandatory? Yes. Enrollment in this program is mandatory for each family. When is the enrollment deadline? Every family is required to enroll online (set up account) by June 24, 2014.   How do I enroll with Smart Tuition?
  • Go to www.enrollwithsmart.com
  • Enter the SCA school code 12594, your email address, and click “New Registration”
  • Provide family information, student information, and payment method
  • If you need help with the enrollment process, please call Smart Tuition at 888-868-8828
Is there an enrollment fee? Yes. The enrollment fee is $29. This is an annual fee due at the start of every new school year. It covers the Smart Tuition services of receiving and managing tuition payments. PLEASE NOTE: If you enrolled before June 13, 2014 the fee will be added on to your 1st tuition payment due in July 2014. Families that enroll after June 13, 2014 will see the fee displayed at time of enrollment.  Besides the $29 enrollment fee are there any other fees I should be aware of?
  • 2.65% monthly processing fee for both credit cards and debit/bank cards
  • $30 fee from your banking institution for failed auto-debit and NSF or failed checks
  • $35 Smart Tuition follow-up service fee for collection efforts for past due balances
What are my payment options? Auto-debit through the Smart Tuition website, mobile app, pay with cash at 7-11 stores, or you can click “mail me an invoice" when you enroll to receive a paper bill by mail. If you choose the "mail me an invoice" option, once you receive your invoice mail a check or cashier check along with your pay stub directly to Smart Tuition. Make mailed checks payable to Smart Tuition. What credit cards / types of bank accounts do you accept payments from? Accepted forms of card payments are Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or your checking account. If you choose to pay through your bank account, you can use your debit card if it has one of the above-mentioned company logos displayed on the card. You can also use your bank account by entering your routing number when you enroll. If I send payments through the SCA office, do I still need to pay the $29 annual enrollment fee? Yes. Your payments are ultimately managed by Smart Tuition. All applicable fees still apply. When will I receive payment due date reminders? Smart Tuition sends paper invoice reminders about 3 weeks before each payment is due. You can opt to Go Green on the website when you enroll which will allow for your invoices to be sent via email. When is a tuition payment considered past due? Accounts are considered past due on after the 15th calendar day of each month.  Will I receive confirmation that my payment has been processed? Yes. Smart Tuition will send you a confirmation once your payment has been processed. How do I apply any tuition credits such as TRIP credits to my Smart Tuition payment? Contact the SCA office when the time comes to ensure your TRIP and/or other credits are properly accounted for to your Smart Tuition account.  What kind of things can I do through the Smart Tuition website? Through the Smart Tuition website, families can make tuition payments, review last payment information, edit bank or credit card information, edit personal information, view itemized fees and discounts and print a report of all payments made in a particular school year. Whom do I contact with questions throughout the school year? Smart Tuition gets a lot of calls that are best-suited for the schools they serve. And occasionally, schools receive calls that would be best-suited for Smart Tuition. Here’s a simple guide to know when to call whom: When to call Smart Tuition 888-868-8828 (24hrs/7 days a week): - Missing Login ID and password and payment materials - Make a payment - Review recent payments - Change bank/credit card information - Update personal information - Concerns regarding your account When to contact St. Catherine of Alexandria School: - Questions regarding certain amounts due - Loss of job or income or other reason for non-payment

John Rolence and Ed Arquilla ran the Easter Food drive this Saturday and Sunday before/after every mass. John has officially handed the duties over to Ed for the Thanksgiving and Easter food drives. Thanks John for the help and guidance this weekend. We filled up 5 1/2 tables with canned goods, paper products, cereal, and we also received $530 in cash donations which we in turn bought gift cards for Wal-Mart (from TRIP). Mario and the gang from Our Lady of Guadeloupe were very appreciative of the support the Men's Club and St. Catherine provided to them to help fill their food pantry which has been depleted over the long, cold winter. Maria also stated the monetary/gift card amount was a record. All in all it was a great success and a new target to beat for next year. The pictures attached are pictures of some of the tables plus John and Kayleigh Rolence helping get the food from Kane Hall to the van. Assistance during Sunday's mass for running the food down to Kane hall was led by Kayleigh Rolence, Maddie Knightly, and Isabelle Arquilla. Assistance loading up the van was the entire Rolence Family (John, Dee, John, Kayleigh) and Ed Arquilla.

With individual confessions During Lent, we are called in a special way to acknowledge our sinfulness and seek reconciliation with the Lord by celebrating the sacrament of Reconciliation. To fulfill one’s Easter Duty, Catholics who are in the state of sin have an obligation to approach the sacrament of Penance during the time of Lent and Easter, from the First Sunday of Lent through Trinity Sunday.

The Walk-A-Thon provides students and families with an opportunity to raise money for our school and allows us to show our spirit as we proudly walk through the neighborhood. Last year’s event raised approximately $15,000 used to improve the computer lab and purchase other instructional materials. This year, we hope to exceed those results. If we do, St. Catherine’s students will receive an out of uniform day to celebrate! Please check out the 2013 Walk-A-Thon information page under our Fundraising section.

Welcome to the new St. Catherine's of Alexandria website! Please change your bookmarks to http://www.scaoaklawn.org and continue to visit for updated content, announcements, and features.

Goals of the New Website

There were several goals for the new website:

  • Make it easier for the community to find information
  • Make it easier for the staff to update that information
  • Enable St. Catherine's community leaders to publish updates themselves
  • Leverage free software, donated web hosting, and volunteered development time

What's Next?

We hope we were successful in taking the first step towards building a useful website for the community. The Technology committee will be helping the School and Parish determine the most cost-effective way to bring St. Catherine's in line with today's technology demands. We are considering future updates for things like:

  • updating any missing content
  • a Photo Gallery
  • a place for Sports Scores
  • ability to register online for sports and events
  • ability to make payments online for certain fees

These features will help day-to-day maintenance, increase community support, and help attract new families to join us.

Call to All Community Leaders

If you currently run one of the Parent Organizations or another type of group at St. Catherine's and would like to leverage the new website, update information, or create announcements, please email Greg Heidorn at greg.heidorn@gmail.com. He will setup your group with a page on the site and an account for making announcements (that appear in link lists on the home page!) and changes to that page.

Comments and Suggestions

If you have comments or suggestions for the Technology committee, please let us know by emailing Ms. Hudson (chudson@scaoaklawn.org), Chris Ivers (chris.ivers@gmail.com) or Greg Heidorn (greg.heidorn@gmail.com).

The St. Catherine’s Athletic Association has finally divided the teams and will start the Jr. BBall season this coming Saturday afternoon, 9/14/13, with practices only. Sorry for the delay with getting this in order this year, time has gotten away from us. Check out the Teams and Schedule here. The coaches will be getting their team rosters this evening and will get in touch with each player tonight for tomorrow. If you do not receive a call for your child by Friday morning, please send me an email and we will check on it right away. We do not want any of the children to be inadvertently overlooked. Thanks again for having your child participate in our Jr. BBall program, it has been a great success for the kids, parents and for our school – we are all winners because of it.
