Science Research Project Rubric
6th
Grade
While typing your Science Research project, please make a
title page. In the center of the first
page, please include your name, date, and name of your invention. Remember you can use another invention as a
possible guide, but you must incorporate your own personal design in your
invention. Use a standard font with the
text size (14) for your paper. You may
use a larger text size for your title page.
Remember to double-space your work.
The order of your
paper is the title page, purpose, materials, research, procedure, diagram,
conclusion, thank you note, and bibliography.
Make a heading for each part of your paper. The heading should be on the left side of the
page for each description. You need to
bold your heading. Each part of your
paper needs to follow each other. Points will be deducted if your research is
not in the correct order.
At the top of your paper, you will need to type out your
purpose. Your purpose needs to be clear
and state why someone or something would you use your invention. See the purpose in your organization packet.
You will earn 5
points by clearly writing the purpose of your invention in your paper. You will earn 2.5 points by providing an
incomplete purpose for your invention or a purpose that is unclear. You will earn no points for not providing a
purpose.
The next step will be to type a list of materials and any
amounts used for your invention. See
materials that you listed in the organization packet. You may have added new materials since
starting your invention.
You will earn 5
points for your list of materials. You
will earn 2.5 points if noticeable materials are missing. No points will be given if you do not provide
any materials.
Additionally, a research section was sent home in the
organization packet. You need to have at
least three quotes from three different sources in your research section. (One source must be an interview and two
additional sources must be from other forms of sources like Internet
sources). You may have more than three
sources. You need to follow the correct
format, while giving credit to each source.
Look over the research sheets.
You also need to work on describing information from your quotes.
You will earn 30
points for providing research and have three different sources – one being an
interview and two additional sources must be from other forms of sources like
Internet sources. You will earn 20
points for incorporating research and have two different sources. You will earn 10 points for incorporating
research and have only used one source in your research paper. No points will be given if you do not provide
any research. Points will be deducted
if you do not follow the correct format of giving any source credit. Points will also be deducted if you do not
make an attempt to work on describing information from your quotes.
Points will be
deducted if there is no information from an interview source. You must have at least two additional sources
besides an interview source. If you do
not have at least two additional sources besides an interview source, points
will be deducted.
The next part of your project will be the procedure. You need to review your procedure sheet that
was sent home. Check over that you listed
in numerical order or bullet points the steps for how you put your invention
together.
You will earn 20
points in your paper for a detailed procedure that explains your invention from
beginning, middle, and end typing the steps in numerical order or bullet points. You will receive 15 points for a procedure of
your invention that provides a description of each part of your procedure in
numerical order or bullet points, but your information is somewhat
unclear. You will receive 10 points for
a procedure in numerical order or bullet points that is mostly unclear of how
to put your invention together. Finally,
a procedure that provides few details in numerical order or bullet points to
explain your invention will receive 5 points. No
points will be given if you do not provide a procedure for your invention.
You will need to have drawn
a diagram of your invention. Your
diagram needs to be clearly labeled with at least six different things for your
invention. Your diagram and words
labeled needs to be gone over using colored pencils or markers.
You will earn 18
points for a diagram of your invention that is drawn and is clearly labeled
with at least six different things for your invention You will earn 16 points for a diagram of
your invention that is drawn and is labeled with five different things for your
invention. You will earn 14 points for a
diagram of your invention that is drawn and is labeled with four different
things for your invention. You will earn
12 points for a diagram of your invention that is drawn and is labeled with
three different things for your invention.
You will earn 10 points for a diagram of your invention that is drawn
and is labeled with two different things for your invention. You will earn 8 points for a diagram of your invention
that is drawn and is labeled with only one thing for your invention. A diagram of your invention with nothing
labeled will only earn 6 points. You
will lose an additional three points if the diagram and descriptions labeled
for your invention is not gone over using colored pencils or markers.
You will earn no
points if there is no diagram of your invention.
Next, you need to build and construct your invention. A model of your invention needs to be brought
to school for project on April 1st or 2nd.
You will earn 20
points for a completed model of your invention.
You will earn 10 points for an incomplete model of an invention. You will earn no points if there is no
completed model of your invention.
Inventions turned in after April 2nd will lose points
depending on how many days late it is turned in.
Next, you will need a conclusion for your project. You need to review your conclusion sheet that
was sent home. Check over that you
provided a description for each of the points of your conclusion.
You will earn 15
points for a conclusion that describes a complete description of how your
invention helped you learn more about science.
It also contains a complete description of how your invention helped
shape people’s lives. You will earn 13 points for a conclusion that is mostly complete,
but is missing a supporting sentence.
You will earn 10 points for a conclusion that has some information, but is
missing two supporting sentences. You
will earn 7.5 points for a conclusion that is half complete, and is missing
three supporting sentences. You will
earn 5 points for a conclusion with little information and only contains two
sentences. Finally, you will earn 2
points for a conclusion that provides very little information. No points will be given if you do not provide
a conclusion.
After your conclusion, remember to include a short
description of any people you would like to thank that helped you with your
Science Research project. This includes
people that helped you at home, at school, or any other locations.
You will earn 4
points for completing your short description of people that helped you with
your Science Research project. No points will be earned if this part of
the Science Research project is incomplete.
Remember to check over your typed paper for spelling
errors.
You will earn 15
points for a completed paper with no spelling errors. You will earn 12 points for a completed paper
with a few (1-2) spelling errors. You
will earn 8 points for a paper with some (3-5) spelling errors. You will 4 points for a paper with many spelling errors (6 errors or more).
Students will be worked on a bibliography page in
school. Students will use the
bibliography sheet provided.
You will earn 18
points for having at least three sources.
You will earn 12 points for including two sources on your bibliography
sheet. You will earn 6 points for
including one source on your bibliography sheet. No points will be given if there is no
bibliography attached to your Science Research project. Points will be deducted if the format is not
completed correctly for one or more sources.
You will lose 6
points if you do not have an interview source.
You must also have at least two additional sources besides an interview
source. If you do not have at least two
additional sources besides an interview source, you will lose 6 points.
The Science research
paper is due by Monday, April 1st. Any late projects will be deducted one
letter grade. More points will be
deducted if this project is late after one day.
We have been working on this science project in steps. Multiple science classes have been given to
work on this project. I have also
returned various parts of the project and have edited them. You will need to add/revise any information for
your final copy. Remember you need to
turn in all parts of your rough draft with the final copy.
Please have this Science Research Project Rubric signed for
Wednesday, March 27th.
